The music industry is constantly changing, and with it, the need for creative solutions to help independent artists succeed. To meet this demand, Universal Music Group (UMG) has developed a program to invest in the future of music, working with companies that can provide the necessary tools and resources. Grand Central Tech is one such initiative, based on its vision of creating a new technology community in the heart of Manhattan. Additionally, Techstars runs 19 different programs in cities around the globe, including three in New York City, inspiring hundreds of accelerators to follow suit.
To further support the contributions that acceleration programs bring to the global startup ecosystem, UMG works closely with leading technology accelerators in major business centers around the world. This includes evaluating and developing music-based startups, as well as organizing and sponsoring hackathons around the world. One such example is SPIN Labs, established in partnership with KRMA, an independent digital agency based in Los Angeles and Nashville. UMG teams in each territory work closely with local accelerators during the application process and advise accepted digital music companies. Meanwhile, accelerators guide these new companies in developing, launching and raising funds for new innovative products.
